Eye diseases
A simple guide to the most common conditions that can affect the eyes: what they are, which signs not to underestimate and when to see an ophthalmologist, the professional who diagnoses and treats them.
Cataract
The progressive clouding of the lens, the eye's natural lens. It is common with advancing age and is resolved with surgery.
Glaucoma
Known as the “silent thief of sight”: it slowly damages the optic nerve and narrows the visual field, often without symptoms at first. That is why regular check-ups with an ophthalmologist are important.
Macular degeneration
It affects the macula, the central part of the retina, and reduces central vision. It is more common after the age of 50-60.
Dry eye
Burning, a gritty feeling and red eyes caused by insufficient or poor-quality tears. Very common, especially with screens, air conditioning and contact lenses.
Eye allergies
Itching, watering and redness, often seasonal, caused by pollen, dust or pet hair.
Eye strain
Tired eyes, headaches and blurred vision after many hours at the computer or reading.
Floaters (vitreous opacities)
Dots, threads or “flies” that move across the visual field. Often harmless, but if they appear suddenly they must be checked by an ophthalmologist straight away.
After surgery or an injury
What to know about caring for your eyes after surgery or a minor injury, always following the ophthalmologist's instructions.
The role of check-ups
Many of these conditions cause no symptoms at first: that is why a visit to the ophthalmologist every year is recommended. At Ottica Paoletti you can have an eye test: if we notice something that deserves further investigation, we will advise you to see an ophthalmologist.
