What is posture and how is it related to vision?
Posture is the bodily balance that allows us to adapt to the environment for static and dynamic activities. It is the result of the Tonic Postural System (S.T.P.), a complex of organs and structures that collaborate to optimize our relationship with the surrounding space. Among these, exteroceptors (sight, touch, hearing), proprioceptors (which regulate body parts), and higher centers (which process information) play a key role.
In this balance, vision is fundamental: an uncorrected vision defect can alter posture, while incorrect posture can negatively affect vision.
Posture and vision defects: a deep connection
Scientific studies (Baron, Gagey, Bricot, Bourdiol, Bortolin, Roll) confirm that the visual system and posture are closely related. A vision defect such as astigmatism, myopia, hyperopia, or convergence problems can induce incorrect postural adaptations, from foot support to ocular musculature. These imbalances, if not compensated, can cause pain, headaches, dizziness, or neck pain. Similarly, poor posture can degrade binocular coordination and visual performance, leading to phorias or eye strain.
Signs of a visuo-postural problem
Recognizing symptoms is the first step to intervention. Here are the main signs:
Cervicalgia: Neck, back, or limb pain, often linked to visual imbalances.
Headaches: Unilateral, temporal, or occipital headaches, with photophobia or tearing.
Dizziness: Feeling of instability, lightheadedness, or motor difficulties.
Fatigue: Excessive tiredness, difficulty concentrating, or decreased performance.
General malaise: Fear of open spaces, discomfort while driving, or poor distance perception.
The visuo-postural exam: a targeted solution
Our optometric-postural exam evaluates vision as a postural receptor, analyzing how the patient perceives and processes external information. This exam identifies whether postural disorders stem from visual problems, defining the type of interference. Thanks to a detailed anamnesis and specific tests, we provide the necessary compensation with glasses or contact lenses to restore balance.
Postural adaptations can persist for years, so we recommend regular check-ups to monitor progress and, if necessary, update the optical prescription. Adequate correction is essential to maintain benefits over time.
