Posture and vision: discover the visuo-postural exam

Visual-postural examination for posture and vision

What is posture and how does it relate to vision?

What is Posture and its Relation to Vision?

Posture is the body balance that allows us to adapt to the environment to perform static and dynamic activities. It is the result of the Tonic Postural System (STP) , a complex of organs and structures that work together to optimize our relationship with the surrounding space. Among these, exteroceptors (sight, touch, hearing), proprioceptors (which regulate the parts of the body) and higher centers (which process information) play a key role.

In this balance, vision is fundamental: an uncorrected visual defect can alter posture, while an incorrect posture can negatively affect vision.

Posture and Vision Defects: A Deep Connection

Posture and visual defects: correlation

Scientific studies (Baron, Gagey, Bricot, Bourdiol, Bortolin, Roll) confirm that the visual system and posture are closely related. A visual defect such as astigmatism, myopia, hyperopia or convergence problems can lead to incorrect postural adaptations, from the foot support to the ocular muscles. These imbalances, if not compensated, can cause pain, headaches, dizziness or neck pain. Similarly, an incorrect posture can degrade binocular coordination and visual performance, leading to phoria or ocular fatigue.

Signs of a visual-postural problem

Recognizing the symptoms is the first step to intervention. Here are the main signs:

Cervicalgia due to visual-postural problems

Cervicalgia: Pain in the neck, back or limbs, often related to visual imbalances.

Headaches related to vision defects

Headache: Unilateral, temporal or occipital headaches, with photophobia or tearing.

Vertigo due to visual-postural imbalances

Vertigo: Feeling unsteady, dizzy, or having difficulty moving.

Eye and postural fatigue

Fatigue: Excessive fatigue, difficulty concentrating, or a decrease in performance.

General malaise due to visual problems

General malaise: Fear of open spaces, discomfort when driving or poor perception of distances.

The visual-postural exam: a targeted solution

Our optometric-postural visit evaluates vision as a postural receptor, analyzing how the patient perceives and processes external information. This exam identifies whether postural disorders arise from visual problems, defining the type of interference. Thanks to a detailed anamnesis and specific tests, we provide the necessary compensation with glasses or contact lenses to restore balance.

Postural adjustments can persist for years, so we recommend regular check-ups to monitor progress and update your prescription if necessary. Proper correction is essential to maintain benefits over time.
