Quantitative and qualitative deficiencies of the tear film are the basis of the events that characterize dry eye syndrome.

A reduction in water in the aqueous layer causes tear hyperosmolarity, which leads to damage to the epithelium, activating a cascade of inflammatory events at the ocular surface.

Epithelial damage results in cell death by apoptosis and loss of goblet cells. The resulting alteration in mucin production determines tear film instability.

Dry eye syndrome, if not treated promptly with adequate therapy, creates a vicious circle that feeds on itself and can cause chronic dry eyes and even serious epithelial damage.

The tear film, in addition to lubricating, hydrating and protecting the corneal surface, serves to provide oxygen and nutrients to the cornea. In particular, the aqueous phase carries water-soluble substances and at least 17 amino acids have been highlighted within it.

The addition of Amino Acids to Hyaluronic Acid in eye drops has determined a statistically significant improvement in the signs and symptoms of dry eye disease and has also determined a more rapid recovery of the physiological conditions of the corneal epithelium and the subepithelial nervous plexus.

A tear film supplement based on Hyaluronic Acid and Amino Acids represents a useful means for the treatment of medium/severe dry eye.
