Astigmatism: What it is and how to correct it

Astigmatism: explanation and correction

What is astigmatism?

People with astigmatism do not see clearly either up close or far away. This vision defect results from a deformation of the cornea (the front part of the eye) or an alteration of internal structures, such as the lens. Instead of being perfectly spherical, the cornea of astigmatic individuals is often flattened, causing light rays to distort and making images blurry.

What causes astigmatism?

The precise causes of astigmatism are not yet fully known, but in most cases, it is linked to hereditary factors. If you have difficulty seeing clearly, it might be helpful to look at your family tree! In some cases, however, it can be caused by ocular trauma or conditions like keratoconus, a disease that makes the cornea conical.

How to recognize astigmatism?

The most reliable way to diagnose astigmatism is to undergo an eye exam by an optician or ophthalmologist. However, you can do a preliminary test at home with this simple check:

DIY astigmatism test

Look at this "star" with one eye at a time. If all the rays appear equally sharp, your vision is likely uniform. If you notice differences in sharpness in some directions, you might have astigmatism!

Note: This test does not replace a specialist visit, but it can give you a first indication.

Types of astigmatism

Astigmatism is classified based on the structure involved:

  • Corneal astigmatism: Caused by an anomaly in the curvature of the cornea.
  • Lenticular astigmatism: Results from internal alterations, such as the lens.

Can you be nearsighted and astigmatic at the same time?

Yes, astigmatism can coexist with myopia, hyperopia, or presbyopia. It is a condition that often combines with other vision defects, making personalized correction even more important.

How to correct astigmatism?

There are two main solutions to improve vision in astigmatic individuals:

  • Prescription glasses: Specific lenses compensate for corneal distortion.
  • Contact lenses: Also available in toric versions, designed for astigmatism.

In some cases, for more advanced corrections, refractive surgery may be considered, but a specialist consultation is always necessary.
